5 Ways to Cut Down on Screen Time This Fall

Let’s be honest, when the weather turns crisp and the evenings get longer, it’s way too easy for kids to get glued to tablets, phones, and gaming consoles. I’ve been experimenting with ways to keep my kids engaged without screens, and it’s actually been fun—so I thought I’d share what’s been working.

1. Embrace the Outdoors

Fall is perfect for getting outside. The crisp air, colorful leaves, and cool weather make nature a natural playground. Try going on short hikes, backyard scavenger hunts, or even just a walk to collect unique leaves. You can turn it into a game: who finds the most interesting leaf or acorn? Bonus: kids learn about nature, observe wildlife, and get some much-needed exercise—all while stepping away from screens.

2. Seasonal Crafts & STEM Experiments

Pumpkin carving, leaf rubbings, and acorn crafts are always hits. But why not go a step further with STEM-based activities? Build a tiny catapult with sticks and rubber bands, create “fall potions” using water, vinegar, and food coloring, or try leaf-powered boat races in a shallow tub. These projects spark curiosity, teach problem-solving, and keep their hands busy—way better than passive screen time.

3. Cozy Reading & Creative Writing

Cooler evenings are perfect for setting up a cozy reading nook with blankets, pillows, and maybe a mug of hot cocoa. Pick books with fall or Halloween themes to keep it seasonal. Encourage kids to write their own stories or illustrate comic strips. Even journaling about their day or creating short plays with siblings can be a great alternative to screens, boosting literacy and creativity at the same time.

4. Indoor Active Play

When it’s raining or too chilly outside, indoor activity can still keep kids moving. Try obstacle courses in the living room, dance parties, or even kid-friendly yoga sessions. You can make chores fun too: timing tidying up or turning laundry sorting into a game keeps them active and engaged. Even board games with movement, like Twister, can double as exercise and entertainment.

5. Family Game Nights

I’ve started instituting weekly game nights with my kids, and it’s amazing how much it helps reduce screens. Board games, card games, or trivia challenges not only teach strategy and patience but also encourage quality family time. Spice it up with seasonal twists like pumpkin-themed trivia or Halloween charades—it’s a fun way to bond and keep everyone off devices.

6. Cooking & Baking Fun

Fall is also the season of seasonal produce—apples, pumpkins, squash—you name it! Involve your kids in cooking or baking. They can help measure, mix, and decorate. Not only is it a screen-free activity, but it also teaches them practical life skills, creativity, and healthy eating habits. Plus, there’s a tasty reward at the end!

Final Thoughts

By mixing outdoor adventures, creative crafts, reading, indoor activity, family game nights, and cooking, it’s possible to significantly reduce screen time this fall. Kids stay engaged, learn new skills, and actually enjoy it without feeling like it’s a punishment.

The best part? These activities give kids room for imagination and independence while helping you feel less guilty about all the time they might otherwise spend on screens.

Give some of these a try this season—you might even enjoy stepping away from your own screens for a bit too! 🍁
